Dune Pattern at the Death Valley Dunes

November 2005

$25.00$1,600.00

This photograph was taken with my 4×5 large-format K. B. Canham camera using Velvia ISO 50-speed transparency film; this film has very fine silver grains, such that—if the photography is done properly—exquisite details are attainable within the images, like we see here: individual grains of sand can be distinguished. Sand dune physics is quite fascinating, a subject to appear in my writings. The Death Valley Dunes on Mesquite Flat near Stovepipe Wells are the most popular for park visitors. For the best experience, you must take your shoes off for a stroll into the fun-filled, sandbox wonderland! This is the dune field where in the first Star Wars movie, Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), we see the droid R2-D2 moving along on the planet Tatooine, where Luke Skywalker grew up; and in the movie in the distance, I can identify the Kit Fox Hills, the Death Valley Buttes, Hell’s Gate, and the ridgeline of the Grapevine Mountains that many years ago I silhouetted for the top graphic element on the web-design for my business Death Valley Landscapes, LLC (see DeathValleyLandscapes.com).
