Smoke Trees! (Psorothamnus spinosus)

November 2017

$25.00$1,600.00

The biologist Edmund C. Jaeger, Sc.D. (1887-1983), in his 1957 publication, A Naturalist’s Death Valley, wrote that Smoke Trees can be found in Death Valley National Park, in a place that he identified as Smoke Tree Canyon in the Owlshead Mountains. I found many healthy specimens of this charming, essentially leafless species—reminiscent of crucifixion thorns used on Jesus Christ—when I did the long hike to get there. And that included examples of the enchanting royal-purple blossoms! Smoke Trees are most comfortable in the Sonoran Desert all the way down to Mexico; therefore, much further North in Death Valley in the Mojave Desert, they’ve reached their Northernmost distribution. Here’s Jaeger: “Due to its rarity and isolation few Death Valley visitors ever see this delicate, silvery-blue-green spiny plant. This is without doubt the most northern point of occurrence of this charming species” (A Naturalist’s Death Valley, revised 5th edition, 1979, p. 35, Jaeger, Edmund C.). This scene also has specimens of  Desert Holly (Atriplex hymenelytra) and Desert Fir (Peucephyllum schotti), the latter also known as Pigmy Cedar.
