The Grandstand on the Racetrack

January 2001

$25.00$1,600.00

This snowy scene isn’t something many visitors to Racetrack Valley (3,714 ft, 1,132 m) will bear witness to. And as I took this photograph—with my medium-format 645 Bronica camera—it was still snowing lavishly. Wild experience! See my book, pages 198-200, for a scientific description on this place as a “racetrack” with its “grandstand.” This photograph is published at the start of my Chapter Six, since that long chapter about the 1960s Charles Manson sex-and-drugs, criminal, hippie cult in Death Valley includes a group of them committing arson at the Racetrack on September 19, 1969. That foolish event triggered the authorities to go after the criminals; then, only later while in jail, were some members of the Manson Family accused of perpetrating the atrocious, gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders. In other words, the capture of the murderers began with the authorities pursuing them first for crimes committed at the Racetrack (plus as suspects of stolen vehicles).
