Amargosa River

November 2004

$25.00$1,600.00

The Amargosa River is mostly a dry desert stream bed except for those rare wet years like during an El Niño weather annual. Its course runs 185 miles (300 km) along a protracted route beginning in Nevada as a 6,000 square mile (15,600 sq km) hydrologic drainage region. That includes the river flowing through Beatty, one of the few places where Amargosa water flows openly; otherwise, the water percolates only down below in gravels and soils along the very long course of the streambed. In this scene we see, along the shoreline and beyond, displays of nearly pure sodium chloride—i.e., common table salt; plus the thriving highly salt-tolerant Pickleweed (Salicornia rubra). Those distant striations in the mountain ridges are geologic formations—over a billion years old!—from the Middle Proterozoic; that’s from the Deep Time upon our Earth.
