Ancient Bristlecone Pines

July 2005

$25.00$1,600.00

These Ancient Bristlecone Pines (Pinus longaeva) act as the grand sentinels upon the mountaintop. Above 10,000 feet (>3,000 m) close now to Telescope Peak (11,039 ft, 3,365 m) is only place in the huge park where they grow. In my book, I make the statement: “I worship this tree as if I were a pagan living in ancient Europe before the arrival of Christianity by the Holy Roman Empire during the late fifth century” (p. 232). They remind me of giant bonsai: surviving the windswept high peaks and characteristically displaying naked, decay-resistant wood without its bark—wood that can be marbled with cream colors, reddish hues, and streaks of deep purple to black. This species has been documented to survive 3 to 5,000 years! The ridge on the mid-section of the scene, to the right side, is where I slept; and behind that ridge is where I discovered a huge patch of Winter snow! Thank God because I didn’t have enough water cached, so I harvested the snow. Ones sees lovely lavender to purple Panamint Mountain Lupines (Lupinus magnificus). Here in the Summer, this day at Furnace Creek recorded the high / low temperatures: 129° / 98°. Imagine that.
