Rock Lichen in North Park

May 2016

$25.00$1,600.00

This remote area of the park is quite honestly nothing less than a fantasy land. I’ve been calling it North Park for many years now—we are in the Nelson Range—and the flora at this high elevation (7,000 ft; 2,150 m) is marvelous and thriving: e.g., Piñon Pine (Pinus monophylla), Joshua Trees (Yucca brevifolia), Mojave Sage (Salvia mohavensis), and many more, including many species of wildflowers. But the headliner plants here are the 3 species of rock lichen—it’s everywhere; and it’s always only 3 species, only 3 colors: the burnt orange rosettes of Caloplaca murorum; the brilliant yellow to lime-green Acarospora chlorophana; and the pastel-green, almost mushroom-like Lecanora saxicola (new name: Pleopsidium flavum). My understanding is that Acarospora chlorophana—sometimes known as “gold cobblestone lichen”—growing outwardly in a circular, radiating pattern, only grows about an eighth of an inch (a few millimeters) per century! Wow! Apparently, this is perhaps the slowest growing of all known plants on our plant Earth. Very close to where this photograph was taken is the first place in the park that I chanced upon a rattlesnake—not sure what subspecies.
